Castle Howard

Structural & Civil Consultants have carried out a range of projects at Castle Howard.

Recent work has included:

  • the design of oak-framed garage buildings for an inner courtyard working with Surveyors LHL;
  • temporary works and modifications in the stable blocks;
  • advice on under-floor chimney flues;
  • calculations for loading capacities for weddings and other parties;
  • initial designs for major strengthening works for the Octagonal tower.

Remedial works on the Octagonal tower should be commencing in the autumn of 2016. S&CC Ltd have worked with Savills and contractors William Aneley, providing structural advice for the planned major repairs. Inspections had revealed decay in the timber structure and although there had been no damage to date, we recommended that there were significant vulnerabilities to be addressed.  The over-riding issues were associated with temporary access above the elaborate plaster dome in the Long Gallery immediately below.
